The 4-part prompt formula that works in every AI chatbot
Role, task, context and format: a simple formula that turns vague prompts into answers you can use.
· 6 min readMost people type a few words into ChatGPT, get a generic answer, and decide AI is "not that good". The problem is usually the prompt, not the tool. This simple formula fixes most of it.
The formula
- Role: who should the AI be?
- Task: what exactly do you want?
- Context: who is it for, what is the situation, what are the limits?
- Format: how long, what structure, what tone?
Before and after
| Before | After |
|---|---|
write a post about our new cafe | You are a social media manager for a small cafe. Write an Instagram caption announcing our new cinnamon latte. Audience: students nearby. Friendly tone, under 40 words, one emoji. |
The second prompt takes 20 more seconds to write and saves you five rounds of "no, make it shorter".
Why each part matters
Role
A role sets the voice and the expertise. "You are a patient maths tutor" gives a very different answer from "You are a university professor".
Task
Use a clear action verb: write, summarise, compare, list, explain, rewrite, plan.
Context
This is the part people skip, and it is the most important. The AI does not know your audience, your goal or your limits unless you say them.
Format
Ask for exactly what you will use: a table, 5 bullet points, an email under 100 words, a numbered plan.
A template you can copy
You are a [role]. [Task]. Context: [audience, situation, limits]. Format: [length, structure, tone].
Two bonus tricks
- Ask it to ask you first. End with: "Before you answer, ask me up to 5 questions." Great when you are not sure what details matter.
- Refine instead of restarting. Reply with "shorter", "simpler words" or "give me 3 versions".
