AI mistakes and how to avoid them

Hallucinations, outdated info, bias and privacy: how to stay safe.

AI chatbots are powerful, but they make mistakes. Knowing the common ones is what separates a beginner from a smart AI user.

1. Hallucinations: confident but wrong

A hallucination is when the AI states something false as if it were true. It can invent facts, statistics, quotes, book titles or even website links. This happens because the model generates likely-sounding text; it does not always know when it does not know.

How to protect yourself:

  • Check important facts, numbers and quotes in a reliable source.
  • Ask: "What are you unsure about in this answer?"
  • For research, use a tool that shows its sources, and open those sources.

2. Outdated information

Models learn from data up to a certain date. Unless a tool can search the web, it may not know about recent events, new prices or updated rules. For anything that changes often, check a current source.

3. Bias

AI learns from human writing, so it can repeat human biases about people, cultures or jobs. If an answer seems one-sided, ask for other viewpoints or reword your question.

4. Privacy

Treat a chatbot like a public place. Do not paste:

  • Passwords, PINs or one-time codes
  • National ID, passport or bank card numbers
  • Private information about other people
  • Confidential work documents, unless your company allows it

5. Over-trusting AI for big decisions

AI can help you understand health, legal or money topics, but it is not a doctor, lawyer or financial adviser. Use it to learn and prepare good questions, then talk to a qualified person for important decisions.

Golden rule: you are responsible for anything you send, publish or decide, even if AI helped you write it.

A quick checklist before you use an AI answer

QuestionWhy
Is any fact or number important here?If yes, verify it.
Did I share anything private? If yes, remove it next time.
Does it sound like me?Edit the tone before sending.
Would I be okay if this was wrong? If not, double-check.

Key takeaways

  • AI can make up facts, sources and numbers. Check anything important.
  • Never paste passwords, ID numbers, bank details or private data of other people.
  • You are responsible for what you publish or send, even if AI wrote it.
